Just leave a message, maybe I’ll call. Former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury said he was done after he played a preseason period for the Penguins. Yet, teams are now calling the 41-year-old goalie, and he is listening. Elsewhere in the Daily, the Buffalo Sabres and new GM Jarmo Kekalainen are going to “swing for the fences,” 2026 predictions, and what did the Penguins need from Santa?

Some rather obvious news–Harrison Brunicke was selected for Team Canada’s World Junior team. The tournament begins today.

And, my new wireless mics arrived! That means better sound on the postgame videos and better sound for the postgame Dan Muse presser. I heard the complaints, and there wasn’t much I could do, but I may have figured out a nice workaround. I’m sure we’ll have some trial and error, but Dano here splurged on some decent equipment this month. Rather than upgrading the studio equipment, I bought the Shure mic designed for podcasting, and it sounds great for the Live Chats and podcast. And the travel mic sounded pretty sharp, too, once we dialed it in.

Hey, the quality matters to me, but I don’t always have the time to really sit down and exclusively dedicate time to the shows–I suspect in the next year, I’m going to add some people who can. But I am very…VERY choosy when it comes to that.

And, with just one more left, the holidays are over! NYE is an easy one for me to ignore because it is such an amateur hour, with wildly overpriced cover charges for overcrowded spots with bad bands, screaming reality show-type drama, and one glass of cheap sparkling wine at midnight. I’m happy to say no thanks. I used to get uptight about it and really try to make plans, but they’d always get changed by others, fall through, and I’d wind up at places I had no desire to be or with people I didn’t enjoy, and it’s so nice to leave all of that behind.

NYE tip: Enjoy yourself. Don’t get suckered into the hype.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Ho ho ho–what did Santa leave for the struggling flightless birds? We asked for five things–the impossible, the very doable, and some sentimental things on the Christmas Day Penguins blog.

Sportsnet: In a somewhat surprising twist to the story, there are credible reports, starting with ESPN’s Greg Wyshinski, that posit Marc-Andre Fleury is open to a comeback.

There are only two people who would know the answer to Fleury’s willingness; choose your sources on the forthcoming Fleury stories carefully.

NYI Hockey Now: It’s also been a surprising resurgence for the New York Islanders. Just six months ago, it looked like doomsday on Long Island (Ok, it always looks like that, but this time for real), but the big change that ignited more change was removing Lou Lamoriello and replacing him with Mathieu Darche.
