A former Vancouver Canucks forward has found himself in a difficult situation overseas in the KHL, his first season of professional hockey outside of North America.
Coming off an impressive showing in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin had some big decisions to make in order to keep his group successful heading into the following season.
The Amsterdam native’s tenure with the Vancouver Canucks didn’t last long, appearing in just nine games before being traded to the Seattle Kraken, who would then go on to deal him to the New Jersey Devils ahead of the deadline in March and after going unsigned all summer, Sprong decided to head overseas to the KHL, putting pen-to-paper on a one-year contract with CSKA Moscow.

However despite remaining at a point-per-game pace, things have quickly soured overseas for Daniel Sprong as Hockey News Hub reported on X on Thursday that the 28-year-old winger was a healthy scratch for CSKA Moscow’s Christmas game against Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod, marking the ninth straight contest he’s been in the press box.
“#CSKA Daniel Sprong healthy scratched for 9th game in a row #KHL” Hockey News Hub said.
Sprong’s last game with his club came on Thursday, November 27th against Lada Togliatti where he picked up an assist in a 4-2 victory, giving himself 31 points (12 G, 19 A) on the season.
Reasons for Sprong being a healthy scratch for nearly a month remain unclear at the moment, but there’s no question the former Vancouver Canucks forward is frustrated about what’s going on and it wouldn’t be a shock to anyone if both sides go their separate ways in the New Year, allowing him to find a new club for the rest of the 2025-26 season.
