The Toronto Maple Leafs have a clear trade goal according to reports, but finding it hasn’t been easy.
The plan for the Toronto Maple Leafs to upgrade their roster has been revealed in a new report, but the challenge on Toronto’s end is getting their right fit.
The Leafs have been viewed as likely to add rather than rebuild, having already traded away their next two first round picks and with a lack of prospects, the more sensible option would appear to be going all-in.
The indication is that Toronto seems to know what they need in their roster to take the team to the next level, but that upgrade isn’t coming to them on a silver platter.
Leafs reportedly targeting speed in the lineup, but haven’t found the right option
According to a report from insider David Pagnotta of ‘The Fourth Period’, the Toronto Maple Leafs would like to add some speed at forward.
Pagnotta reports that Toronto could add up to two forwards that add an additional increased pace in the lineup, specifically for the Leafs top-six.
Adding speed is a clear need for the Leafs and an underrated one, with the analytics showing Toronto has been a slower team this season so far.
One area of concern is captain Auston Matthews, who has been less quick this season and showing less of his elite shot, meaning that adding more speed around him on the wing is something Toronto could use.
The issue outlined by Pagnotta is that the Leafs haven’t found the right option that brings some speed into the lineup, something that would likely cost them to get a young, mobile top-six forward.
The report could indicate that veteran trade targets such as Nazem Kadri may be less of a focus for Toronto if quickness is a factor, likely trending towards someone more young and quick footed.
The key for the Leafs is that adding speed and a support in their top-six isn’t an easy goal whether for one addition or two, but signals where the Leafs feel is the biggest target for them to add in their lineup.
