Oilers' 29-year old forward leaving NHL mid-season to sign contract in Sweden

The Edmonton Oilers are losing a forward in the middle of the season.

David Tomasek is heading back to Sweden.

Officially, the Oilers announced Friday that they’re placing Tomasek on waivers “for the purpose of contract termination.”

And the reports out of Sweden are that Tomasek is signing a contract to play for Farjestad BK in the domestic professional league there.

Tomasek signed a one-year contract with the Oilers in April that was for $1.2 million in the 2025-26 season.

He was initially ticketed for the AHL, but Zach Hyman’s injury brought Tomasek to the NHL.

When Hyman returned, it relegated Tomasek to a partial role, playing in eight of the 19 games since Hyman was back.

Tomasek has three goals and two assists in 22 games this season.

The 29-year old is heading back to the team he played for for two seasons before coming to Edmonton.

In 2024-25, Tomasek had 57 points in 47 games for Farjestad.

Now, he returns to a place he is clearly comfortable and will surely see much more time on the ice.

It’s a bit of a depth loss for the Oilers, but if Edmonton stays healthy, it likely won’t be hurt too much by this loss.
