EDMONTON, Wis. (WMTV) -On this day, December 27, 1981- Wayne Gretzky scored four goals and added one assist to reach 100 points in just 38 games, becoming the fastest player in NHL history to achieve the milestone during the Edmonton Oilers’ 10-3 victory over the Los Angeles.
The four goals gave the Oilers what they needed to secure the lopsided win. The achievement came during Gretzky’s fifth season with Edmonton.
Gretzky would record nine 100-point seasons during his career, including four seasons where he scored over 200 points. He still holds the record for most 100-point seasons in NHL history.
The hockey legend played another 16 years after the milestone, retiring from the New York Rangers following the 1999 season. He played for 20 years total and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999.
