The New York Islanders placed top goaltender Ilya Sorokin on injured reserve, the team announced on Saturday.
The move was made retroactive to Dec. 20.

Sorokin has not made an appearance since the Islanders fell 4-1 to the Vancouver Canucks on Dec. 19, where he stopped 27 of 30 shots faced in playing the entire game (he was pulled late as the Islanders sought a goal with an empty net, but was not replaced). He allowed three first-period goals in the loss.
David Rittich got the start in the two games the Islanders have played since.
Sorokin has been a steady presence in net for the Islanders since he made his debut in the 2020-21 season. In the past four seasons, Sorokin has started at least 52 games, and has finished in the top 10 in Vezina Trophy voting in each of those campaigns.
In 24 games this year, the 30-year-old Sorokin has a .910 save percentage and a 2.55 goals-against average, with a 12-10-2 record.
Sorokin was signed to an eight-year deal worth $66 million in July of 2023, making him one of the highest-paid goaltenders across the NHL.
The Islanders play the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday in their first game out of the Christmas Break. New York enters the game third in the Metropolitan Division at 20-13-4.
