After a three-day break, Jakob Chychrun kept the holiday spirit going on Saturday night, gifting the Capitals an overtime game-winning goal against the New Jersey Devils.
Chychrun struck off the rush in the final minute of overtime, speeding down the ice from the defensive zone before batting his own rebound out of mid-air past Devils netminder Jake Allen.
“The guy’s a top defenseman in the league, so credit to him for getting us two points tonight,” goaltender Logan Thompson said postgame.
The victory marked just the second time all season that the Capitals have won in overtime, ending a months-long drought dating back October 14 — their fourth game of the campaign — when Chychrun scored the game-winner over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Devils, meanwhile, had the league’s best overtime record, winning seven of their first eight games that went past regulation.
Before his goal on Saturday, Chychrun had already skated for more than half of the overtime period and was on the tail end of a 1:14 shift. Head coach Spencer Carbery praised Chychrun for his endurance on the play, especially in the first game after the holiday break.
“We’ve struggled in overtime,” Carbery said. “We haven’t found a way to win one of these games, so it was nice for Chycky. Steps up, makes a huge play for us. Goes end-to-end, just another display of his unique ability to skate.
“Even though he’s at the end of a shift — he’s been out there for a minute-plus and still finds a way to use his explosiveness, power, and speed to get to the net. It’s a huge play for our group.”
Chychrun, meanwhile, credited Nic Dowd for not heading to the bench earlier in the play when he had the puck in the defensive zone. Instead, Dowd stayed out to receive the pass, later dishing it to Chychrun for the primary assist on the goal.
“Well, we got caught out there, both my shifts,” Chychrun said. “Just a good job, all the boys hanging in there and trying to come up with a loose puck. And then [Dowd] did a great job not changing and leaving me on an island. I think we were all a little tired. So, big credit to him for sticking in there and giving me an out.
“I just saw an opportunity to go. I was obviously tired, but I was just trying to get an opportunity there…I felt like before I even entered the zone, I kind of had a step on [Devils forward Paul Cotter], and he didn’t seem to be gaining on me. So that’s when I kind of committed to it. But yeah, probably would have aborted if I felt like he had some more juice. But it was fortunate.”
With his tally against the Devils, Chychrun now leads all NHL defensemen with 15 goals in 38 games and ties Alex Ovechkin for second-most on the Capitals. He’s now on pace for a 32-goal season and could become the first Caps blueliner since Mike Green (2008-09) to hit the 30-goal mark.
The Capitals will continue their road trip with a flight down to Chychrun’s native Florida, where they will hold their first post-holiday break practice on Sunday before facing the Panthers on Monday night.
