Unable to land Quinn Hughes, that doesn’t mean the Detroit Red Wings will stop looking to add a top-four defenseman before the NHL trade deadline. And one such rearguard who certainly is going to be on the trading block is Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson.

Andersson will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and it doesn’t seem as though a new contract with the Flames will be happening for the 29-year-old rearguard.

“It takes two to dance,” Andersson told Sportsnet. “I love every second I’ve played here and have been here for almost 11 years. But we’ll leave it there. It takes two to dance.”

Of course, there’s also the issue that Andersson encountered a near-death experience in Detroit a couple of years ago. Might that leave him with a sour taste when it comes to Hockeytown?

Former Red Wings Forward Berggren Settling Into St. Louis

Right-winger Jonatan Berggren is settling in nicely with the St. Louis Blues since they claimed him on waivers from the Red Wings. In four games wearing the Blue Note, he’s averaging a point per game with 2-2-4 totals.

Points this season from Jonatan Berggren:

Injuries have forced Berggren to play in the top six forwards for St. Louis. A member of the Blues’ front office, speaking to Detroit Hockey Now, said the club doesn’t envision him staying in that role. Nor do they anticipate Berggren maintaining a similar level of offensive productivity over the long haul.

What the Blues believe is that Berggren is a serviceable NHL player who can be of help. He’s the fifth ex-Red Wings player to suit up for St. Louis this season. Berggren joins Matt Luff, Pius Suter, Robby Fabbri, and Oskar Sundqvist among the Detroit alumni playing for the Blues.

Miller Time Up In The Soo?

There’s no questioning the fact that the Red Wings are deep in goaltending prospects. At the pro level, Sebastian Cossa, Michal Postava, and Carter Gylander all show potential. Michigan State’s Trey Augustine is among the best goalies in college hockey. Moncton’s Rudy Guimond continues to shine in the QMJHL.

Then there’s Landon Miller. The netminder chosen 126th overall by Detroit in the 2024 NHL entry draft appears to be running out of runway to establish himself as a pro prospect.

Miller’s OHL club, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds are 21-11-1-1 and loading up to make a long playoff run. Among the players they’ve acquired is defenseman Lukas Fischer, the son of former Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer.

Miller, though, ranks 13th in the OHL in goals-against average (2.87) and 19th in the 20-team league in save percentage (.888).

There’s strong speculation in OHL circles that the Greyhounds will make a move for a goaltender before the January 9 OHL trade deadline.
