ST. PAUL, MN – Bruins prospects were back in action on Saturday. There were four games at the IIHF World Junior Championships in Minnesota, starting at 2:00 PM and continuing all night. Two Bruins prospects played for Team USA, and a third is ready and waiting for Team Czechia.
Over in Davos, Switzerland, two more Bruins prospects skated for the US Collegiate Selects. That includes Chris Pelosi, who did not play on Friday. Both Team USA and the US Collegiate Selects emerged victorious, but let’s check in on how the Bruins’ talent did.
The United States faced off against Switzerland on Saturday evening, just before the Bruins and Sabres game kicked off. After his performance on Friday, Will Zellers was moved up to skate on the third line. James Hagens remained as the first-line center.
The United States defeated Team Switzerland by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night. Both of the Bruins’ prospects playing in the game made their mark on the scoresheet.
James Hagens (BC) picked up another assist, dropping a pass back to Brodie Ziemer to get the scoring started for the night. The Bruins’ first-round pick would go on to amass over 20 minutes of ice time on 19 shifts. He was the only American forward to eclipse 20 minutes of ice time on Saturday.
Will Zellers (North Dakota) would continue to show why he should not have been a late addition to camp. He tallied his third goal of the tournament on his only shot of the night. Zellers is now three-for-three on the shots he has taken this tournament; he went two-for-two last night.
Although they have only played two games, Zellers leads the United States in points with four (3-1–4). The red, white, and blue will have a day off on Sunday and will play Slovakia on Monday at 6:00 PM ET.
Vashek Blanar did not get into the Czech lineup on Saturday. He remains with the team in Minnesota and is ready in case of an injury. Team Czechia will have a day off on Sunday before their game against Finland on Monday at 3:30 PM ET.
Spengler Cup
The US Collegiate Selects were back in action on Saturday afternoon. Both of the Bruins’ prospects named to the team were in the lineup and skated with each other on the fourth line wings.
Ryan Walsh (Cornell) picked up 11:15 of ice time, and Chris Pelosi (Quinnipiac) logged 10:31. Both skaters finished with a minus-one rating on the game. The Collegiate Selects bested the host HC Davos by a score of 5-3.
The Collegiate Selects will have an off-day on Sunday, but will be back in action either Monday or Tuesday. Their next game will be a part of the knockout stage, and tomorrow’s contest between Canada and HC Davos will determine the final seeding. All six teams will make the knockout stage, and the two group winners will advance to the semi-finals.
