Igor Chernyshov’s first NHL goal was the San Jose Sharks’ game-winning goal as they beat the Vancouver Canucks 6-3 to snap a three-game losing streak.
Chernyshov’s third-period tally put the Sharks ahead 4-2, but the team had to hang on to win. The San Jose Sharks winger also had an assist. Ryan Reaves, William Eklund, and John Klingberg all scored for the Sharks, who push their record to 18-17-3. Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to seven (5 goals, 9 assists). Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves.
Former Sharks prospect Linus Karlsson scored for the Canucks, who lost their second straight game after winning four in a row. Marco Rossi and Drew O’Connor also scored for the Canuck, and Thatcher Demko made 31 saves.
Vincent Iorio played his first game in his hometown and had an assist on Reaves’ goal. Collin Graf stayed hot with an empty net goal.
The Sharks played with a lot of structure, and outshot the Canucks by a wide margin. The Sharks finally scored on their power play, but still only converted once, going 1 for 5. The penalty kill still misses Vincent Desharnais, as it went 3-for-4.
Reaves stuffed in a loose puck to put the Sharks up 1-0 at 6:13 of the first period. Vincent Iorio’s shot from the point squeaked through Demko, and Reaves poked the puck in before it got covered.
Klingberg pushed the Sharks lead to 2-0 at 7:55. Celebrini won a face-off cleanly, and Klingberg walked the point and his wrist shot beat Demko five-hole.
Karlsson scored a power play goal to cut the Sharks lead to 2-1 at 10:04. Conor Garland fed a great cross-ice pass to an open Karlsson for the tap-in past Askarov.
Eklund pushed the Sharks lead to 3-1 at 12:38 of the second period. A shot rebounded in front, and Eklund got a touch before the Canucks scored an own goal.
Marco Rossi scored 36 seconds into the third period to cut it to 3-2.
Chernyshov scored his first NHL goal at the tail end of a power play at 4:47 to make it 4-2. Chernyshov finished off a 2-on-1 down low pass from Adam Gaudette.
O’Connor scored a shorthanded goal at 10:43 to make it 4-3. The Canucks winger got sprung on an odd-man rush and beat Askarov over the glove.
Celebrini sniped one at 16:20 to make it 5-3. Chernyshov got the primary assist for his second point of the game.
Graf scored an empty net goal for the 6-3 final.
