Tyler Bertuzzi scored twice and Nick Lardis buried the shootout winner as Chicago outlasted Dallas 4–3.
The Chicago Blackhawks ended a six-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout win over the Dallas Stars, the second-best team in the NHL. Tyler Bertuzzi scored two goals, Alex Vlasic assisted twice, and Nick Lardis scored the winning goal in the shootout. A fun win in an otherwise pretty bleak stretch of hockey for the Hawks.

Game Summary: Blackhawks 4 – Stars 3 (Shootout)
The first period was fairly even between the two teams. The Blackhawks owned 48% of shot attempts at 5-on-5 (Corsi) and had the advantage in expected goals share (51.69 xG%). Tyler Bertuzzi opened scoring just over three minutes in thanks to a beautiful play from Alex Vlasic. Just over the midway point, Nils Lundkvist scored from the point thanks to a double screen on Arvid Soderblom.
The second period was the Blackhawks’ best, which hasn’t been the case all season. They owned a 58.62% Corsi, a 60.39% xG%, and 9-6 scoring chances (all at 5-on-5). Jason Dickinson scored just over the halfway mark after carrying the puck through the neutral zone and scoring from the high-slot. Justin Hryckowian scored a minute later to tie the game 2-2. I wasn’t a fan of the route Artyom Levshunov selected on the defensive zone entry, which left space open for Hryckowian to score.

The Stars pushed in the third period, and they had the better side of the analytics: 53.57% Corsi and a 69.54 xG% favoring Dallas. Just over the halfway mark (again), Mikko Rantanen scored after a turnover by Ryan Greene. Greene meant to give the puck back to Alex Vlasic, who wasn’t aware of Greene’s pass. Greene could have just pressed up the ice, which would have caught the Stars with some momentum. Colton Dach was already high in the neutral zone, and Oliver Moore could have joined Greene for a rush. Tyler Bertuzzi scored just over a minute later to tie the game 3-3. Nick Lardis would score the game-winning shootout goal to give the Blackhawks their first win in over six games.
Game Notes
Arvid Soderblom had an excellent game with a .903 SV% and some big moments.
Nick Lardis was on the fourth line tonight, while Landon Slaggert was immediately placed on the first line. Maybe his shootout game-winner will gain some brownie points with head coach Jeff Blashill. In 10:32 minutes, Lardis had two shots on goal and three shot attempts. At 5-on-5, Lardis had a 65% Corsi and a 73 xG%. His line was matched against Dallas’ third line (Hryckowian-Matt Duchene-Jaimie Benn).
Slaggert made the most of his call-up from Rockford with a solid performance. However, I’d like to see Lardis take his spot on the top line next time. Slaggert had two shots on goal and two shot attempts and gave the Blackhawks a 35.71% Corsi when he was on the ice.
Alex Vlasic had a strong game with his two assists.
The penalty kill deserves praise for shutting down all four power plays from the second-best man-advantage in the league.
The Blackhawks return to Chicago tonight to take on the Pittsburgh Penguins at 6:00 p.m. CT.
