COLUMBUS, Ohio — Mat Barzal was ejected from the Islanders’ game against the Blue Jackets on Sunday after using his stick as a baseball bat and swinging it onto Mason Marchment 1:37 into the second period.
Marchment had taken a roughing penalty for a late hit on Matthew Schaefer in the first period and tripped him early in the second, prompting a reaction from the Islanders.
Ryan Pulock had words with Marchment before Barzal put both hands on his stick and swung it across Marchment’s knees.

Three Columbus players immediately converged on Barzal in response.
Marchment was given a two-minute tripping penalty and Barzal was given a five-minute major and game misconduct.
It would not be a surprise if Barzal was fined and suspended for the Islanders’ game on Tuesday in Chicago as well.
