Update (Dec. 29, 9:39PM): The Edmonton Oilers could be looking to move Mangiapane soon as the forward was a healthy scratch on Monday night:
According to Elliotte Friedman and his 32 Thoughts, the Oilers may look to trade Andrew Mangiapane as he aspires for a bigger role; one he could find in Toronto.
Another name who was attached so heavily to the team was Andrew Mangiapane, a former Brad Treliving player and someone who could have added a lot of offensive help without sacrificing on defense; and would have fit perfectly anywhere in the lineup.
He signed with Edmonton after a lengthy delay, and although he was now on a team with the world’s best player, it seems things haven’t worked out as well as both sides had hoped.
And now he may be on the move elsewhere.
Mangiapane on the move? Insider believes it’s possible
Oilers could be looking to trade Mangiapane, he might be looking to waive his NMC for a team offering a bigger role.
It would be a bit of a disappointment for GM Stan Bowman and the Oilers organization to have struck out on Mangiapane after needing offensive help after losing names like Connor Brown and Evander Kane.
But if he is indeed on the move, then the Maple Leafs should be a team who target him for numerous reasons.
Why Brad Treliving should target Andrew Mangiapane
First, he’s already got that connection with Brad Treliving and he had his best seasons in Calgary; including a 35-goal outburst in 2021-22.
Secondly, he’s a player who can fit anywhere in the lineup. Right now Toronto is using Bobby McMann and Max Domi up top with Auston Matthews; Mangiapane can slide in for McMann, or go onto the second line for Matias Maccelli alongside John Tavares and William Nylander.
This season, he has 11 points in 39 games and has only skated in 13:31 TOI; slightly above last season however nowhere near his career numbers of 14:39 and losing over a minute of ice-time is disappointing even if it’s not that substantial to some.
Mangiapane, 29, is a Toronto native who has 254 points in 537 games (128 goals, 126 assists) with a blistering plus-52 rating, 215 blocks and 529 hits; he’s actually a lot more physical than his 5’10, 183-pound frame suggests.
So if Toronto wants to improve their lineup without wrecking their future prospects, then seeing if Andrew Mangiapane wants to be Auston Matthews’ sidekick for the next couple years.
