Boulder Creek High School senior Joshua Hyvarinen has a track record of service with his church, one that’s helped him become a hockey captain.

He helps lead the Arizona Bobcats 18U club hockey team, also suiting up for Mountain Ridge High School on the scholastic circuit. Church involvement has played a big part in him becoming a leader and based on his long-term plans, the involvement is likely to continue after high school.

Hyvarinen spends his weekends working with junior high students at a Christ’s Church of the Valley branch on Saturdays, working in the tech booth of a Christ’s Church Assembly of God branch on Sunday mornings.

He recently went on a church mission trip to Moldova, where travelers hosted less fortunate kids at a sports camp.

More recently, Hyvarinen has become vice president of a “Donuts and Devos” club at school, pairing free donuts with bible devotionals on a weekly basis.

Other recent examples of service include setting up a GoFundMe page for a friend who had been in a car accident, as well as a manual labor service offered to the community that was operated through social media.

One of 10 finalists for the Arizona Sports’ Character Counts Scholarship, presented by Parker & Sons, Hyvarinen said he’s been accepted to Liberty University, which has a Christian background.

Whether there, or at a smaller school in Indiana or Texas ahead of transferring to a larger hockey program, he wants to study accounting and play collegiate hockey.
