The Edmonton Oilers’ efforts to manage their roster hit a snag on Tuesday when the Carolina Hurricanesclaimed one of their forwards off waivers.
The Oilers attempted to send Noah Philp to AHL Bakersfield following his return from long-term injured reserve by placing him on waivers, but ended up losing him for nothing.

Philp, 27, was coming off an upper-body injury suffered in November. Edmonton hoped he would clear waivers and be reassigned, but instead lost the forward to the Eastern Conference franchise.
Philp had two goals and three points in 15 games this season, skating mostly in a bottom-six role and averaging fewer than 10 minutes per game. His role in the lineup was diminished by Zach Hyman’s return and the emergence of Jack Roslovic, who’s had a bigger presence of late.

According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, reporting on Monday’s episode of the “32 Thoughts,” Edmonton had fielded trade calls on Philp before placing him on waivers.
“I’ve had people tell me that if he clears waivers — and he might, he might not — this story might not be over,” Friedman said.
The Hurricanes appear to have been one of the interested teams, and they reassigned Bradly Nadeau in a corresponding move to make room for Philp in their NHL roster.

Philp is expected to fill a depth role in Carolina, potentially slotting in while Seth Jarvis remains injured, as the newly-acquired forward cannot be sent down to the AHL for at least one month after being claimed.

For Edmonton, the loss of Philp coincides with a larger roster shuffle pointed out by Friedman.
The Sportsnet reporter also discussed on Monday the possibility of the Oilers positioning for bigger moves, likely including a trade involving fellow forward Andrew Mangiapane, who was a healthy scratch on Monday.

With prospects Isaac Howard and Quinn Hutson posting strong numbers in the AHL’s Bakersfield, the Oilers may lean on internal reinforcements while flipping Mangiapane for multiple players that could add depth to the roster elsewhere.
Howard has 20 points in 15 AHL games, while Hutson leads the Condors with 30 points in 25 contests, and both are expected to be considered for NHL call-ups in the coming weeks. Mangiapane, meanwhile, has scored just 11 points in 39 games.
The Oilers are 20-14-6 and will host the Boston Bruins on Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. ET.
