Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote has given an update on the team’s search for their next captain after trading away Quinn Hughes earlier this month.
For the first time since the second half of the 2022-23 season, the Vancouver Canucks are without a captain on their roster after the club dealt Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild after they received word he wouldn’t sign a contract extension with them this coming summer.””I am very proud to have played for the Vancouver Canucks for 7 years, I loved the passion in the city & it brought me some of the most exciting times of my life, living out my dream. What makes playing in Vancouver so special is the people, the city, and what the team means to them! I will always be proud to have represented the Canucks!” Quinn Hughes said on social media following the trade.
Adam Foote gives update on Vancouver Canucks’ search for their next captain
When speaking with reporters ahead of Tuesday night’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers, Head Coach Adam Foote revealed that while the club doesn’t have a timeline to name their next captain, they have held discussions on who should wear the ‘C’ next.
“Well we’ve had discussions but I wouldn’t say we had a discussion on time.” Foote told reporters.
The best move for Adam Foote and his coaching staff would be to play out the 2025-26 season with the four alternates they have right now and make a decision during training camp next September.
There’s no need to rush to name a captain right now and Adam Foote knows that, as the Canucks don’t want to come to regret giving someone the ‘C’ that probably shouldn’t get it in the first place.
Looking ahead however, considering players that are on long-term contracts, some potential candidates to be the 16th captain of the Vancouver Canucks include Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Conor Garland and Filip Hronek, all of whom have worn an ‘A’ on their chest and have been part of the team’s leadership group at various points.
