One Sportsnet employee is predicting that the Maple Leafs will not only miss the playoffs, but also trade Auston Matthews for 2025 second overall pick Michael Misa.
Last week, Leafs GM Brad Treliving shot down rumours of waiving the white flag and approaching Auston Matthews for a trade.
That hasn’t stopped debates from swirling on social media as to whether or not they should explore trading the former first-overall pick and begin a rebuild.
Auston Matthews for Misa and More?
As we head into 2026, Sportsnet’s Ryan Dixon shared a list of bold predictions for the second half of the NHL season, including one that sees the Leafs missing the playoffs and ultimately deciding to trade the three-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner to the San Jose Sharks.
Dixon’s proposal sees the Leafs sending their captain to the Sharks for a package centered around 2025 2nd-overall pick Michael Misa.
“After missing the playoffs by two points, the Leafs will have a cards-on-the-table talk with captain Auston Matthews that results in him being dealt to the Sharks for a package built around Michael Misa.”
What Else, Besides Misa, Would Be Included in a Package For Matthews?
There is no doubt fans would want the Leafs to ask for Macklin Celebrini as part of a package for Matthews, but that is something the Sharks would immediately shut down. So what does that leave for the Leafs?
The Sharks have 2 first-round picks in the 2026 draft as well as one in 2027 and 2028, along with four second-round picks in the next three drafts. Depending how far the Leafs want to go in pursusing a rebuild, if Matthews is dealt, the Leafs would not only want Misa, but at least 1 of the Sharks’ first round picks, and at least 1 of their 2nd round picks. The Leafs would also likely want a roster player or two as well.
Whether Matthews stays or goes is still up for debate, but one thing is for certain — if the Leafs do trade him, they will get a haul for the 2016 first overall pick.
