The Washington Capitals have signed former Minnesota defenseman Ryan Chesley to a three-year entry-level deal, it was announced late last week.
Chesley, a 2022 second round pick of the Capitals, just finished his junior season with the Golden Gophers and first as captain, putting up eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 40 games. Having joined the AHL’s Hershey Bears after his NCAA season ended, Chesley collected a goal and three points in four games.
A product of Mahtomedi, Minn., Chesley played in 115 career NCAA games over three seasons, scoring 12 goals and adding 26 assists for 38 points,. Before heading to Minnesota, Chesley spent two seasons with the U.S. NTDP.
With Chesley now turning pro, he adds to an already solid system of young players in the Capitals system. Having flashed his offensive game this year, Chesley has the chance to hit the ground running in his first pro season and is a strong candidate to make his NHL debut during the 2025-26 season.
