Adam Foote has delivered some crushing news regarding Vancouver Canucks injured defenseman Derek Forbort, who has been out of the lineup since early October.

The veteran defenseman appeared in the Canucks’ first two games of the 2025-26 season – a win over the Calgary Flames on October 9th & a loss to the Edmonton Oilers on October 11th, but was out of the lineup on Canadian Thanksgiving against the St. Louis Blues.

In the months since Fobort’s injury, the blueliner was placed on injured reserve by the Vancouver Canucks and as of October 24th, was deemed “week-to-week” after suffering a setback according to General Manager Patrik Allvin and on Tuesday, Head Coach Adam Foote gave an unfortunate update on the 33-year-old.

On Tuesday afternoon, Vancouver Canucks Head Coach Adam Foote told reporters that he’s unsure if Derek Forbort will be able to play again during the 2025-26 season.

“Adam Foote says «a few weeks, maybe two» when asked about a possible timeline for Teddy Blueger’s return. Foote also said he’s not sure if Derek Forbort will play again this year.” Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet 650 said.

The Canucks have been pretty mum when it comes to Derek Forbort and the injury he’s dealing Derek Forbort and the injury he’s dealing with, but at the end of November, Irfaan Gaffar of DFO Rundown Insider Edition shared that he’s hearing that it’s a groin/ab issue that has taken longer to heal than everyone was hoping & expecting.

“Meanwhile, Derek Forbort, who has been out for quite some time, is suffering from some sort of groin/ab issue that has taken a lot longer to heal than both parties would have wanted.” Gaffar said.

Forbort, a native of Duluth, Minnesota, joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent in the summer of 2024 and has gone on to suit up in 56 games for the club, registering 11 points (two goals, nine assists), 47 penalty minutes and is a minus-seven.

With the addition of Pierre-Olivier Joseph in the offseason, as well as the emergence of Tom Willander, the Vancouver Canucks have been alright without Derek Forbort in the lineup, but it’s still unfortunate to see that the veteran is unable to play and provide some leadership on the ice for this group that’ll be much younger towards the end of the year than it was in October.
