The Flyers will happily turn the page to 2026 after the final game of 2025 on Wednesday night. They fell behind once again, and were not able to recover on the heels of a back-to-back and 3-in-4.
The Calgary Flames scored three times in the second period and never looked back in a 5-1 defeat for the Flyers.
The Flames got the only goal of the first period at 13:30. Off a transition rush, Mikael Backlund fired a one-timer that beat Sam Ersson for his 10th goal of the season to make it 1-0.
Shots in the first period were 4-3.
The Flames added to the lead at 3:08 of the second. Jonathan Huberdeau took a shot off the face-off that deflected in off Jamie Drysdale to make it 2-0.
The Flyers appeared to answer back in short order with a goal by Nick Seeler on a delayed penalty call. But Carl Grundstrom was in the blue paint and it was determined to be goalie interference after a coach’s challenge.
The Flyers did cut the lead to one at 8:49. Travis Konecny’s shot got behind Dustin Wolf and was knocked into the net by Nazem Kadri. It was Konecny’s 13th goal of the season.
The Flames got a 5-on-3 for 1:57 just past the midpoint of the period and were able to cash in. Rasmus Andersson fired a one-timer past Ersson for his eighth goal of the season to make it 3-1.
On another power play late in the period, the Flames added to the lead again as Yegor Sharangovich scored his eighth goal of the season to make it 4-1.
Through two periods, shots were 15-14 Calgary.
The Flames put the game away with another goal at 9:37. Connor Zary scored off a turnover for his sixth goal of the season.
Ersson made 19 saves on 24 shots in the loss. Wolf made 25 saves on 26 shots in the win.
Zary, Mackenzie Weegar, and Matt Coronato each had two points for Calgary.
The Flyers open play in 2026 and close out the road trip on Saturday afternoon against the Edmonton Oilers at 3:30 p.m.
