Happy New Year, everyone! I hope everyone had a fun and safe celebration ringing in the New Year!

Now, we have our first PhHN Daily of 2026! On it, we talk about the latest Flyers news, including the Olympics, a trade, and, well, an unfortunate game.

Around the league, we have some big trade rumors and much more Team Canada roster chatter.

Get it all on the 1/1 edition of the PhHN Daily!

Philadelphia Flyers

Philly Hockey Now: Travis Sanheim is an Olympian. The defenseman was named to the Canadian roster for the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympics, where NHL players will get to represent their countries for the first time since 2014.

Sanheim was the only Flyer who made Team Canada, as Travis Konecny was left off.

The Flyers made a trade on Wednesday as well. Philadelphia swapped AHL players (both with 150+ NHL games) with the Pittsburgh Penguins, acquiring F Philip Tomasino for D Egor Zamula. Both players played in NHL games this season before being waived.

Here is the trade story from the Pittsburgh side of the deal.

Unfortunately for the Flyers, the day did not end there. They took on the Calgary Flames at the Scotiabank Saddledome, and well, it did not go well. Travis Konecny scored the lone goal for the Flyers in the 5-1 loss. Sam Ersson saw 25 shots, allowing five goals.

Rick Tocchet mixed up the D-pairs, deploying these pairs:

Sanheim-Drysdale
York-Ristolainan
Seeler-Juulsen

Emil Andrae was a healthy scratch in the game, though I’d expect him to return on Saturday when they take on the Oilers at 3:30 p.m. EST.

If those pairs stick and are used on Saturday, we’ll take a deeper look into the new lines (I really like the potential of that top line).

NHL rumors & news

The Province: NHL trade rumors are swirling as the season moves into the New Year. Quinn Hughes was a big-time trade, pulled off by the Minnesota Wild. However, the Vancouver Canucks are still receiving calls, this time about superstar center Elias Pettersson.

Sportsnet: The Canadian roster for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics has been released. Who made it, who didn’t, and what went into the decisions?

San Jose Hockey Now: One player that made it: 19-year-old star Macklin Celebrini. Check out what the young player had to say about making his first (of many) Olympic roster.

Colorado Hockey Now: Devon Toews made the Canadian roster – not a shocker. Mackenzie Blackwood did not – maybe a bit of a shock? Aarif Deen breaks down the possible snub and talks about just why Toews may not go.

Florida Hockey Now: Brad Marchand and Sam Reinhart are Olympians. However, probably the biggest shock of it all, Sam Bennett is not.
