Buffalo Sabres forward Tage Thompson was named to Team USA’s Olympic roster on Friday.
Thompson leads the Sabres in goals (20) and points (37) this season. His 178 goals since the 2021-22 season began ranks 10th among NHL players.
Thompson helped the U.S. win the world hockey championship back in May for the first time since 1933, scoring the game-winning goal in overtime over Switzerland. He scored six goals in the tournament.
Those contributions earned him a spot on the U.S. team at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics as one of only three additions from the 4 Nations Face-Off early last year, alongside forward Clayton Keller and defenseman Seth Jones.
“He’s 6-foot-6 and can skate like the wind,” general manager Bill Guerin said on a video call with reporters Friday. “He’s got an incredible shot, scoring ability — he’s got versatility, as well. He can play center, play wing, kill penalties, he’s on the power play. The versatility, size and skill level are a pretty unique package.”
Additionally, defenseman and captain Rasmus Dahlin has already been announced as a member of Team Sweden and goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen will be a part of Team Finland.
The Olympic Winter Games will take place Feb. 11-22.
