The Grand Rapids Griffins have had different heroes on different nights in their 27-1-1-1 start. But Sebastian Cossa’s consistency in net has been a staple of the best start in American Hockey League history.
He was there again Friday when he made a career-best 47 saves to help the Griffins record a 3-2 shootout win in a game they could have easily lost. Cossa (15th, 2021) tied Jared Coreau’s franchise record for stops on home ice while raising his season record to 16-1-1.
The Griffin extended their points streak to 17 consecutive games, the third-longest in AHL history.
Other Detroit prospects made significant contributions, including defenseman Antti Tuomisto (35th, 2019) who forced the game into overtime by scoring a tying goal with 2:14 minutes left in regulation.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard (15th, 2024) also scored his eighth goal of the season, assisted by John Leonard, who now seems to be in Detroit’s plans. Leonard and Dominik Shine scored the shootout goals that provided the victory. Brandsegg-Nygard now has 21 points in 25 games for Grand Rapids.
