All six Philadelphia Flyers prospects made it to the quarter-finals of the World Juniors. But, with three of them in the same game, the number was going to shrink for the semi-finals slate.

After Friday’s quarters, the matchups for the semis are set: Finland vs. Sweden, Canada vs. Czechia.

All six Flyers prospects, including Shane Vansaghi, who had been scratched since the first game, were in action on Friday. Vansaghi and Team USA lost a heartbreaker in overtime to Heikki Ruohonen, Max Westergard, and Finland. Porter Martone, Jett Luchanko, and Canada are moving on after a dominating win vs. Slovakia. And of course, the Swedish team, captained by Jack Berglund, is moving on after handling Latvia.

Let’s look at some of the Flyers’ prospects’ performances.

Berglund scores for Sweden

Flyers GM Danny Briere never forgets to mention Jack Berglund’s name when talking about the future down the middle for the organization. At the 2026 World Juniors, Berglund is proving just why the organization is high on him.

The Swedish centerman scored his third goal of the tournament on Friday and his 7th point overall, putting him in a tie for 12th in total scoring in the tournament, and 2nd on that Sweden team that looks so good.

Berglund, the Swedish captain, has had himself quite the tournament and has turned many heads. His stock has undoubtedly risen, and his tournament is not yet over. They take on a Finnish team, which we will talk about next Sunday in the semi-finals.

Finland stuns the US, the World Juniors host team

The quest for the three-peat, completed on home soil, is over for the United States World Juniors team. Finland stunned Team USA in overtime on Friday night, upsetting the host nation 4-3 at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Three Flyers prospects played in the game, so we’ll start with Shane Vansaghi, whose tournament has come to an end – the first Flyers prospect to be eliminated from World Juniors.

This World Juniors won’t be one to remember for the Michigan State Spartan, who played in just two games – the first and last for Team USA. Vansaghi was on the ice for just 3:38 in the final game for the Americans, not seeing the ice in the 2nd period or overtime. That brings his total to 8:39 on ice time in two games.

His final statline: 2 shots on goal and a -2 rating.

On the opposing side, much like Berglund, Heikki Ruohonen, and Max Westergard have had their stock rising during this World Juniors. The two Flyers prospects connected for the first Finnish goal of the game, tying the game at 1 in the second period.

Max Westergard made the sweet dish for Heikki Ruohonen in a dangerous area, who buried the shot.

That was both Flyers’ prospects’ lone point of the matchup. Despite that, Ruohonen was named the Player of the Game. Why? Well, in a close game like that, it’s not always who scores the most that makes the most significant impact. Like Berglund, Ruohonen’s impact came as a reliable guy on both ends, racking up big penalty-kill minutes for Finland.

With 2 goals and 6 points, Ruohonen is Finland’s top point-scoring forward and their second leading point scorer overall.

As previously mentioned, Finland will play Sweden in the semis on Sunday.

Canada keeps it going

After a close game with Czechia in the first matchup, followed by an OT scare from Latvia in Game 2, Canada did not look like the juggernaut they were expected to be heading into World Juniors.

Well, since then, Canada has fit the part. They look unstoppable right now, and have scored 7 or more goals for their third-straight game. The Canadians took down Slovakia 7-1 in Friday night’s quarter-finals matchup, cruising to the semi-finals where they will get a rematch with Czechia.

Porter Martone added another goal and assist to his tournament tally. He has 4 goals and 7 points at the 2026 World Juniors, which is good for 11th in total scoring at the tournament, and 4th on Canada.

Martone fed Tij Iglina for a snipe that gave Canada the 2-0 lead just under 15 minutes into the game.

Later, Martone scored a beauty.

Canada’s 7-1 win vs. Slovakia extends its tournament and sets up a box-office rematch with Czechia on Sunday.

What’s next for the Flyers’ prospects at World Juniors

On Sunday, the semi-final matchups at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Ice Hockey Championship will determine the matchups for Monday’s medal games.

First, at 4:30 p.m. EST, Heikki Ruohonen, Max Westergard, and Finland take on Jack Berglund and Sweden at Grand Casino Arena. This should be a great game, especially for Flyers fans to watch.

Following that game, the rematch we have all been waiting for: Czechia vs. Canada at 8:30 p.m. EST, also at Grand Casino Arena.

You could tell there was no love lost between either team in their tournament-opening game. The same matchup, but this time for a trip to the championship? Yeah, get me in front of a TV for that one.

Will Porter Martone, Jett Luchanko, and Team Canada make it to the Championship game? Or, will Czechia eliminate Canada for the third-straight tournament?

All games will be aired on NHL Network.
