Nick Foligno scored the Overtime Winner for the Chicago Blackhawks against the Washington Capitals. 4 of the last 5 games have been 1 goal games for the Hawks.

The Chicago Blackhawks started off the 2026 calendar year right, with a win over the Dallas Stars at the United Center. That said, the good fortunes continued on Saturday, with another shootout win, this time against the Washington Capitals.

First Period

To start the game, the Chicago Blackhawks wasted no time getting on the board. Just over a minute in, Ryan Donato screened Logan Thompson and got his stick on the puck to jump out to an early lead.

Washington rebounded, and Anthony Beauvillier nearly evened the score. Later, it would be a different former Hawk to negate the advantage. Dylan Strome put home a backside rebound off Spencer Knight to tie the game.

On Saturday, Ryan Greene was all over the ice and was robbed back-to-back early on. Chicago dominated early in this game. Landon Slaggert fanned on a net front chance, and Tyler Bertuzzi’s consecutive shots were fended off. After Donato nearly regained the advantage, Spencer Knight shut down Washington to keep the score balanced going into the first intermission. Capitals forward Tom Wilson was injured twice early, the second time being a scary-looking lower leg injury.

Second Period

Compared to the first, the second frame was quite uneventful. Teuvo Teravainen recorded his third straight game with a goal after Tyler Bertuzzi found him at a tough angle. Nic Dowd rang the iron twice in a row, and Sonny Milano had a great chance. Before time expired, Andre Burakovsky was stopped on a breakaway in the dying seconds of the frame

Third Period

Just like the first, the third period brought more action. Teuvo Teravainen made a great defensive effort to keep the advantage in favor of the Chicago Blackhawks. Tyler Bertuzzi was denied again by Logan Thompson, who proved why his selection as one of Canada’s Olympic goaltenders was a good roster choice. However, Spencer Knight’s efforts were more than equal to it as he fended off a rapid, frenzied Capitals attack.

After another Andre Burakovsky breakaway attempt was stuffed, Ryan Leonard managed to tie the game with under five minutes to go. Spencer Knight saved the original point shot, but a diving Leonard batted the puck into the nylon netting. John Carlson’s heroic effort was turned aside by Spencer Knight with four ticks remaining. Once again, the Chicago Blackhawks were partaking in extra hockey.

Overtime/Shootout

Chicago had firm control of overtime. Artyom Levshunov had a good period and Nick Lardis nearly capitalized and drew a penalty (although a lucky call). However, Chicago did nothing with the man advantage and the game headed to a shootout.

Nick Lardis started off the shootout for Chicago, and Dylan Strome answered. Andre Burakovsky played spoiler, keeping the Blackhawks alive in round four. Finally, Nick Foligno sent the boys home with his attempt in the sixth round. After a long night, the Chicago Blackhawks thwarted the Washington Capitals 3-2.

The Cowboy Round-Up and What’s On Tap Next?

Well, fellas, I got good news and bad news. Good news, Hawks win. Bad news, we are winning too much without our star players. For a team without the top two centers, the Blackhawks have sure put on an impressive run of games. Going into the Christmas break, the Chicago Blackhawks had a 1-6-1 record with Connor Bedard. Since the shootout win in Dallas, 3-1-1. Teuvo Teravainen now has three goals in three straight games, and Spencer Knight continues to put on a show. Despite not making the United States Olympic Team (which will be talked about in my YouTube video releasing tomorrow), Knight continues to show out.

Arvid Soderblom will take over in net on Sunday when the Vegas Golden Knights come to town to take on the Chicago Blackhawks. Puck drop is at 6:00 p.m. CT.
