On Sunday, five Flyers prospects took the ice with the chance to play for gold on Monday at the World Junior Championship. By the end of the night, only one remained with a chance at the top prize.
Team Sweden defeated Team Finland, 4-3, in a shootout in the first semi-final game of the day. Jack Berglund, captain of the team and a second-round pick by the Flyers in 2024, had an assist and scored in the fifth round of the shootout to force sudden death. Berglund was stopped in the seventh round before Anton Frondell won it for Sweden in the eighth round.
Finland’s Heikki Ruohonen and Max Westergard saw their bid for gold come to an end in the shootout loss to Sweden. Ruohonen assisted on the game-tying goal in the third period.
In the second semi-final game, Team Canada was once again bounced by Team Czechia, 6-4. Jett Luchanko assisted on the first goal of the game, a power-play goal for Tij Iginla. Down 4-3 with less than three minutes to play, Porter Martone scored the tying goal with 2:41 left in the third. Czechia took the lead back just 1:27 later with 1:14 remaining in the third.
At least two Flyers prospects will return with bronze medals. The bronze medal game will be at 4:30 p.m. between Canada and Finland.
Sweden takes on Czechia at 8:30 p.m. in the gold medal game.
