Vancouver Canucks Will not be Able to Hold On to Star Forward

It’s a weird time for Vancouver Canucks fans, after Patrick Allvin and Jim Rutherford announced a rebuild, they intend on getting younger, but at the same time are trying to re-sign Kiefer Sherwood, rather than trade him.

“Since becoming available on the National Hockey League’s trade market in late November, Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood has become a hot commodity, with several teams showing interest in the winger and reports indicating that talks have begun to heat up over the last week.”-Jaxon

Kiefer Sherwood will not want to stay with the Vancouver Canucks.

Ben Kuzma of the Province reported on the unlikelihood of the Canucks keep Sherwood, other teams will be much more willing to spend money on him, and Sherwood has no reason to stay once his contract is up in the summer. He can go to a winning team, for more money.

“NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reported during his Hockey Night in Canada segment Saturday that the Canucks have discussed an extension, but that a «sizable gap» remains between the two parties. None of this is surprising on several fronts.”-Kuzma

Sherwood’s contract now is only at $1.5M AAV, which for someone on pace for 35 goals and leading the league hits is a dream. But his new contract will likely be in the $5-6MAAV and the Canucks will not be willing to spend that, they want to get younger and spending money on a 30 year old when you aren’t contending doesn’t make sense.

“After all, there’s not much of an appetite here to see Sherwood at least triple his value following an expiring deal that carried a bargain US$1.5 million salary cap hit. The Canucks were concerned about consistency and regression following last season when Sherwood bagged a career high 19 goals and NHL record 464 hits.”-Kuzma

The Canucks should keep trying to trade him to a contender before the deadline, they’ll likely get a first round pick and a blue chip prospect for him. Trying to keep him on the Canucks will not be beneficial to anyone.
