New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin was helped off the ice on Monday, Jan. 5, after a collision in the crease.

Utah Mammoth forward JJ Peterka appeared to make only minimal contact with Shesterkin as he attempted to stop, but the goalie fell backward into his net and slammed his blocker on the ice in pain.

Eventually, Shesterkin got up and didn’t appear to be able to put weight on his leg as a Rangers player and trainer supported him. Backup goalie Jonathan Quick came into the game after the first period play.

The Rangers later announced that Shesterkin wouldn’t return to the game because of a lower body injury.

Igor Shesterkin injury update

Rangers coach Mike Sullivan said after the game that Shesterkin was being evaluated for a lower-body injury.

“Hopefully, it’s not too serious,” he told reporters. “I don’t have an answer for you because obviously they’re going to do more tests on him.”

If he’s out long term, that would be bad news for the Rangers, who entered the day three points out of a playoff spot and lost Monday’s game in overtime.

“He’s an elite player at his position,” Sullivan said. “I think he’s one of the very best in the game and when you lose a player like that for any length of time, those types of players are difficult to replace.”

Shesterkin entered the day tied for second in the league with 17 wins and has a 2.47 goals-against average and .912 save percentage.

Quick had a 2.11 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage in 10 appearances, but he’s 39 and has averaged around 25 appearances a season in New York.
