Kraken 5, Flames 1

A fun one. Both teams skated hard, worked hard and hit hard. In the end the Seattle Kraken continued their hot streak with a 5-1 win over the host Calgary Flames.

After the Flames opened the scoring with the lone goal in the first period from giant forward Adam Klapka, Kraken goalie Philipp Grubauer made sure the score didn’t become any more lopsided. He made a number of “ten bell” saves in the 1st period when his club was outshot 13-8 and again in the second period when they were outshot 18-11.

It allowed rookie winger Jacob Melanson to tie the game at the 2:17 mark of the 2nd period with his first NHL goal. It came on a beautiful crossing pass to the crease from Ryan Winterton.

Seattle came out flying in the third period with the game tied. Shane Wright scored with a tip-in going hard to the net at 1:57 followed by D-man Vince Dunn extending the lead 3:15 later with a snapper from the slot.

Freddie Gaudreau added an empty-netter followed by Matty Beniers adding a tally with Dustin Wolf back in his net.

Grubauer ended up making 41 saves. He’s given up just a single goal in his last four starts.

The last time the Kraken lost in regulation was on December 18th against these same Flames in Calgary when Seattle dropped a 4-2 decision. Since then they’re 7-0-and-1, with the lone setback being a shoot-out loss to the Canucks at home on December 29th.

Seattle hosts the Boston Bruins at home on Tuesday night at Climate Pledge Arena.
