The Pittsburgh Penguins made a bit of news Monday when they were able to walk away from Egor Zamula and his $1.7 million cap hit. We also took a good look at the Penguins’ new projections and what should be expected. They’ve come this far, but analysts and many fans haven’t adjusted. Don’t worry, I’ll explain.

Elsewhere in the Daily, the Ottawa Senators are on the NHL trade market hunting for some help, but rejecting calls about their top prospects. The New York Rangers could be in some trouble as goalie Igor Shesterkin suffered an injury last night.

Six full days at home and only one game. I wonder if the Penguins are also going through a spatial discombobulation?

Also, a note, I’m going to have to watch our travel budget for the remainder of the season. I’m starting to plan for a possible playoff berth, and one-day trips like Seattle might get cut. Too many times on those quick in-and-outs, I just don’t get anything of value for you accomplished. TBD.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Well, that didn’t last long. Less than one week after acquiring Egor Zamula from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for Philip Tomasino, the Penguins first suspended Zamula for not reporting, and are now terminating his contract. Our partners at Puckpedia had the scoop, as the Penguins will terminate Zamula’s contract.

I suppose one Yegor is enough.

I do owe subscribers an insider column this week, but the schedule has been so silly that the couple of record conversations I had were also well off the beaten path.

Let’s get into the off-day blog. We got into an Olympic snub, what could hinder the Penguins’ playoff chase, and should there be new expectations for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ season?

Steelers Now: DK Metcalf breaks his silence on the fan incident that got him suspended for the final two Steelers games.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

Ottawa Sun: Bruce Garrioch has been all over the Ottawa Senators’ attempt to get better and to patch some large holes via the NHL trade market. They’re in danger of missing the playoffs, and goalie Linus Ullmark is on personal leave. Ottawa is trying to be aggressive, but also rejecting some calls.

Sportsnet: The Carolina Hurricanes made a little move Monday, acquiring defenseman Juuso Valimaki from the Utah Mammoth.

Forever Blueshirts: Uh oh, on a couple of fronts. Concern is high today after Igor Shesterkin suffered a scary-looking injury on Monday against Utah. Jim Cerny has the Rangers news.

Philly Hockey Now: It’s been talked about for a few weeks, but it finally happened Monday night. The Flyers signed Christian Dvorak to a hefty new contract.

Boston Hockey Now: Our Boston site is humming again. Jack Studley is at practice, at games, and getting deep into Bruins coverage. Like the Penguins, not much was expected of the Boston Bruins this season, but they are far exceeding expectations. People forgot about one important player–Jeremy Swayman.

Washington Hockey Now: A hat trick for Justin Sourdif as coach Spencer Carberry created his own version of a Kids Line against the Anaheim Ducks, and the Capitals rolled.
