MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) – More than 350 former high school hockey players from Mid-Michigan gathered this weekend for a charitable cause.
The Mid-Michigan High School Alumni Tournament concluded Sunday at Crystal Fieldhouse and 810 Sports Complex.
The tournament included 30 teams from 15 schools in Genesee and Lapeer counties, competing in four age categories: 18 and over, 30 and over, 40 and over, and a new 50 and over bracket.
The event served as a fundraiser for the Old Newsboys of Flint. Spectators were encouraged to donate cash, children’s coloring books or backpacks at the entrance.
“The hockey alumni tournament mixed together with the 810 Sports Complex working together making the hundreds of kids are going to be able to have backpacks and school supplies again this Christmas,” said Tony Tucker, executive director of the Old Newsboys of Flint.
This year marks the 14th year of the tournament. Over the years, the tournament has raised more than $65,000 for local charities.
“Everybody working together like this and doing and having a good time and being able to help the community it’s beautiful,” Tucker said.
Proceeds also benefit the Michigan Youth Hockey Scholarship Fund, supporting youth hockey associations in Genesee County and the Flint Inner City Youth Hockey Program.
