Nikita Nesterenko waivers chatter hits the New York Rangers as they made a questionable move by sending forward Brett Berard to the Hartford Wolf Pack.
On Tuesday, Elliotte Friedman’s note became real business, the Anaheim Ducks placed Nesterenko on NHL waivers. If he clears, he is expected to be assigned to AHL San Diego.
Nesterenko (ANA) on waivers
UPDATE: Spencer Martin and Scott Morrow have been recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack. Brett Berard has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack.
That squeeze is why claiming Nesterenko makes sense. A waiver claim costs no trade assets, but you do need a real NHL roster spot to keep him around.
Nikita Nesterenko waivers tempt New York Rangers
On the ice, Nesterenko profiles like a straight-line depth piece who can support the forecheck and survive defensive-zone shifts. He can also take a draw in a pinch, which matters if Laba’s recovery drags.
The Rangers also might be planning for bodies to return, which makes Berard’s demotion easier to swallow. Mike Sullivan recently said J.T. Miller has been cleared for full contact, and Laba has started skating on his own.
If those returns do not arrive quickly, Nesterenko is the kind of low-cost insurance that keeps lines from getting juggled every period. The next milestone is the waiver clock, because if New York wants him, the decision is immediate.
