Without much more information, including specifying a type of injury, the Pittsburgh Penguins placed winger Rutger McGroarty on injured reserve Wednesday morning.

McGroarty was scratched Sunday in the Penguins’ comeback win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ville Koivunen played in his place and scored a first-period goal. McGroarty returned to the ice on Tuesday and practiced for a while, but left practice early. Coach Dan Muse didn’t have any updates following practice.

UPDATE: After the initial news release, the Penguins’ public relations department updated the situation. McGroarty has been diagnosed with a concussion. There is no timetable for his return.

A player on IR must miss at least seven days. There is no salary cap relief when a team places a player on IR, but a roster spot is opened, and the Penguins figure to need one in the next few days as center Evgeni Malkin appears ready to be activated.

PHN will update the story as soon as the Penguins make more information available, likely after practice at 11 a.m.
