Some new information has emerged late this week about a Canadian team’s interest in Vancouver Canucks pending unrestricted free agent forward Kiefer Sherwood.
“According to several sources, the Vancouver Canucks have let it be known that – in an effort to get younger – they are willing to listen to offers on ‘veteran players.'” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said.
To no one’s surprise, Kiefer Sherwood has garnered the most interest of anyone on Vancouver’s roster so far, with potentially upwards of a dozen teams in the mix, but with the Canucks setting a very high asking price – a first round pick & another asset – it may come right now to Friday, March 6th before the Columbus, Ohio native is actually moved.
New information emerges about Canadian team’s interest in Kiefer Sherwood
“They were in on star defenseman Quinn Hughes before he was traded to the Minnesota Wild last month, as The Athletic previously reported, and have been pushing hard for Vancouver Canucks winger Kiefer Sherwood, a league source said. The asking price is believed to be a first-round pick and possibly more for the 30-year-old who has netted 17 goals through 42 games and is in the final year of a modest contract that pays him $1.5 million annually.” Mercogliano said.
He added, “The acquisition cost is prohibitive for the Rangers, but team president Chris Drury’s focus has been on netting a top-nine forward to bolster an offense that ranks among the lowest-scoring in the NHL.”
While the New York Rangers continue to work through their plan of attack for the trade deadline, it looks like one of their Original Six rivals could enter the mix for Kiefer Sherwood.
“The Canadiens are still looking to add that rare combination of physicality and goal-scoring to their middle six. I heard they were still in on (Kiefer) Sherwood, checked in on (Blake) Coleman and if ever Alex Tuch becomes available, that’s a player I could see Montreal going for as well.” the source said to Marco D’Amico.
The Montreal Canadiens currently lead the Atlantic Division entering action on Friday and someone like Kiefer Sherwood would be a nice spark plug for their bottom-six, however, it’s hard to see General Manager Kent Hughes wanting to part with a first round pick for the Canucks winger, so he may hold out until last minute to see if the price drops.
Another thing to consider with the Canadiens is their logjam at forward when they’re at full health, with guys like Kirby Dach, Jake Evans, Patrik Laine and Alex Newhook all likely back in the lineup before the middle of March, which could lead to some difficult decisions, potentially even some waiver placements or additional trades, if they do want to bring in someone like Kiefer Sherwood.
