In life, they say timing is everything. So, perhaps the timing couldn’t have been better for the Detroit Red Wings to retire Sergei Fedorov’s No. 91.

Red Wings fans will argue that this should’ve been done five, maybe even 10 years ago, and they’re not wrong.

Had they been right, though, Fedorov wouldn’t have been given the chance to share his night of honor with his family.

Fedorov’s children, Aleksandra and Viktor, are nine and eight years old.

They are old enough to understand what’s going on, and perhaps even curious enough to wonder what all the fuss is about.

“I hope they will have a good time. Maybe later, when we get back to Russia, they will ask some questions,” Fedorov said.

Believe it or not, the offspring of one of the greatest Red Wings players, a Hall of Famer, and the only Wings player to win the Hart Trophy in the past 60 years, find watching footage of their father somewhat off-putting.

“They’re watching everything but their dad’s highlights,” Fedorov said. “They watch (Lionel) Messi, (Cristiano) Ronaldo, Ovi (Alexander Ovechkin).

“I tried a couple of times. Let’s watch, you know, a few goals that your dad scored. And my son says, ‘Okay.’ Not much emotions going on.”

Everyone enjoyed watching Trick Kane revel in the moment as the Red Wings were celebrating his dad Patrick’s 500th NHL goal the other night. It’s fascinating to think that Fedorov didn’t father any children with his wife Karina, until long after his playing days were done.

“Maybe a late boomer as far as a family and kids,” Fedorov said. “But I want to make sure I do one thing at a time, and I do it well. So when I was ready, thank God, I met my lovely wife, and we became a family, had kids. It was a lot of fun.

“I don’t mind that they don’t see me play live. There are a lot of videos, a lot of other things. And they still have time to grow up.”

And perhaps, when they return home to Moscow, they’ll find time to download a few of their dad’s magical moments on the ice.
