It didn’t take long for Saturday’s game to go from modestly competitive to a blowout. Monday’s game seemed to follow the same script.
The Tampa Bay Lightning continued their recent surge, securing a 10th straight win by defeating the Philadelphia Flyers, 5-1, on Monday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
The Lightning struck for the game’s first goal early once again. Pontus Holmberg was able to find a loose puck in the slot and beat Dan Vladar to make it 1-0 with his seventh goal of the season at 1:10.
Shots were at a premium in a quick-moving first period. Through 20 minutes, shots were 6-5 Tampa Bay.
The Lightning added to the lead just 33 seconds into the second period. A shot by Erik Cernak hit off the leg of Jake Guentzel and made it 2-0.
Less than four minutes later, on a power play, the Lightning made it 3-0. Brayden Point scored on a rebound in front for his 11th goal of the season. Point was injured on the play and did not return.
Just over a minute after Tampa’s third goal, the Flyers got on the board. Christian Dvorak scored off the rush at 4-on-4 to make it 3-1 with his 10th goal of the season.
The Flyers had two power plays after getting on the board, and were unable to score on either. The Lightning got another power play late and cashed in once again.
Brandon Hagel scored his 22nd of the season with 30 seconds left in the period, and gave the Lightning a 4-1 lead.
Through two periods, shots were 19-15 Tampa Bay.
A physical third period followed, with the only goal being an empty-netter for Nikita Kucherov.
Vladar made 21 saves on 25 shots in the loss. Jonas Johansson made 20 saves on 21 shots.
Hagel, Guentzel, Kucherov, and Darren Raddysh each had two points for Tampa. Kucherov extended his points streak to 10 games.
The Flyers hit the road for a back-to-back, starting on Wednesday night against the Buffalo Sabres at 7:30 p.m.
