Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald remains safe — at least for now.

Situations like this are always fluid, but a person with knowledge of the situation reiterated to NJ Advance Media on Monday that ownership is sticking by Fitzgerald, even as the Devils spiral well out of contention. The person requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the situation.

The Devils are 22-21-2 and six points out of the final wild-card playoff spot, a stunning collapse after starting the season 8-1-0 and being 16-7-1 on Nov. 28.

New Jersey is now 2-7-1 in its last 10 games, and it is 6-13-1 since Dec. 1. The Devils have lost four games in a row and have been outscored 20-5 in that span.

And yet, ownership is sticking by the general manager they promoted to the full-time position nearly six years ago, despite the fact that he’s handcuffed his team with a league-leading 17 no-move/no-trade clauses.

There’s evidence that suggests Fitzgerald may be safe for the rest of the season. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported Monday on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast that Fitzgerald would be evaluated after the 2025-26 season.

“Things that are happening now that they did not consider that they would be doing at the beginning of the year,” Friedman said via 32 Thoughts: The Podcast. “Scratching Dougie Hamilton is one of them.

“You know, Tom Fitzgerald, I expect the season plays out before they go down that road. There still is time to save this and there still is time to get it on track. This is a league of streaks. But also again, I don’t think that this was anything they thought that they were going to have to consider as an organization during the year. Especially the way it started, you go back and look at what their record was after 18 games. You didn’t even think you’d be having these conversations.”

Anything can happen, including with coach Sheldon Keefe, who is now answering questions about his job security, if the Devils lose in disastrous fashion this week. But as of now, Fitzgerald is considered safe.
