COLUMBUS, Ohio — Blue Jackets defenseman Denton Mateychuk won’t play in Tuesday night’s home game vs. the Flames due to an upper body injury. But team president and general manager Don Waddell doesn’t seem to think that Columbus’ talented young defenseman will miss too much time.
Mateychuk, who was injured in Sunday’s 3-2 overtime win at Utah, saw a doctor on Monday per Waddell and was initially cleared. But he will see a second doctor on Tuesday to confirm.
“He got hit from behind as we know, had a little tingle in his arm,” Waddell said. “Assuming everything goes well today, I don’t think it’s going to be too long.”
The former 12th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft has had a good second season, scoring eight goals and 21 points in 44 games. all but two of his points have come on even strength.
With Mateychuk out for Tuesday night, the Blue Jackets brought up defenseman Dysin Mayo on emergency recall from the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. He will not be in the lineup on Tuesday, which is Rick Bowness’ first game as head coach after he replaced the fired Dean Evason.
Mayo has appeared in two games for the Blue Jackets this season, recording one assist.
In 21 games for the Monsters, Mayo has two goals and seven points.
