The Vancouver Canucks dropped yet another game last night, this time to the Ottawa Senators, and one player who wasn’t involved was Tom Willander, as Adam Foote healthy scratched the defensemen.
“The Vancouver Canucks seem to have lost everything that made them a decent team in the NHL, and under head coach Adam Foot there is one aspect on defence that has been clearly abandoned, which is defending the danger areas on the ice.”-Stinson
Adam Foote clears the air over the Tom Willander scratch.
Jeff Paterson posted on X the reasoning behind Foote scratching Willander. He claims with the young defensemen they have, and most of them coming from the NCAA, they aren’t ready to play a full NHL schedule.
#Canucks Foote tipped his hand on the Willander scratch pregame: “We’ve got some young D in a position where they’re not used to playing this many games. That’s why we’re rotating some of them now. Coming from college, they’re used to playing 40 games from September to April and this is a condensed schedule.”
Willander played two seasons at Boston University before joining the Canucks, where had 47 points in 77 games. The rookie defensemen hasn’t had nearly as much success in the NHL recording only 8 points in 35 games, but he hasn’t been on a very competitive team this year, and Foote felt he needed a rest. Especially with this condensed schedule due to the Olympics, Willander was thrown into the fire this season.
