It keeps going from bad to worse for the Philadelphia Flyers. After losing back-to-back games to Tampa Bay – 7-2 on Saturday and 5-1 on Monday – the Flyers fell behind against the Buffalo Sabres, 2-0, after the first period.
On top of that, their top goaltender didn’t return for the second period. Dan Vladar allowed two goals on five shots in the opening frame, then left with injury. He will be re-evaluated after the game.
That’s the main concern, more than a third straight regulation loss and fourth straight loss overall, by a score of 5-2, to the Sabres on Wednesday night.
The Sabres opened the scoring on the power play at 9:30. Rasmus Dahlin was given space and fired a shot that beat Vladar to make it 1-0.
The Sabres added to the lead at 15:13, taking a turnover from Trevor Zegras and turning it into offense with Mattias Samuelsson scoring his eighth goal of the season.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 8-5 Flyers.
The Sabres added to the lead in the second. At 4:22, Ryan McLeod set up Jack Quinn for his 10th goal of the season to make it 3-0.
The Flyers got on the board at 10:28, with Owen Tippett scoring his 15th goal of the season. Buffalo answered back before the end of the period with Dahlin scoring his second power-play goal of the game.
The Flyers got a power-play goal from Zegras in the third, but never got closer. McLeod scored an empty-net short-handed goal in the final minute to cap the scoring.
Sam Ersson made six saves on eight shots in relief. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 20 saves on 22 shots in the win.
Tippett had a goal and an assist for the Flyers. McLeod, Dahlin, Josh Doan, and Tage Thompson each had two points for Buffalo.
The Flyers are right back on the ice on Thursday night to face the Pittsburgh Penguins at 7 p.m.
