PHILADELPHIA – Just like in round one, the Philadelphia Flyers (22-14-8) never stood a chance, falling 5-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning (28-13-3) on Monday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Christian Dvorak scored for the Flyers, while Pontus Holmberg, Jake Guentzel, Brayden Point, Brandon Hagel, and Nikita Kucherov scored for the Lightning.

Tampa Bay scored within the first two minutes of the game once again. The Flyers took too long to answer, and never really gave themselves a chance to get back into the game. Tampa Bay piled on throughout the second period and closed it out in a chaotic third.

Here’s how we got to the final score.

Just like round one

Just like the previous meeting between these two teams, the game started with a quick score. Tampa Bay took the 1-0 lead just 1:10 into the game on a weird goal.

Pontus Holmberg (7) put the puck past Vladar after it was just sitting there untouched. It looked like nobody saw the puck until Homlberg put it in the back of the net. Zemgus Girgensons (4) and Yanni Gourde (10) earned the assists.

That fast start was not a tone setter for the rest of the period. In fact, through 15 minutes of play, there were a combined five shots on goal.

The Flyers chipped in just one of those, but they turned it up in the final five minutes of the period. Nobody scored, but the two teams brought the shot total to a combined 11 headed into the first intermission, 6-5 in favor of the Lightning, who had the 1-0 lead.

It only took 33 seconds out of the first intermission for the Lightning to extend their lead. Erik Cernak (5) fired a puck through traffic. Jake Guentzel (20) was in front of the net, redirecting Cernak’s shot, giving Tampa the 2-0 lead.

Later on, the Lightning would get the first power play of the game on a rather weak tripping call against Rodrigo Abols. The bad luck continued for the Flyers, with Sean Couturier getting taken down behind the play, and no call.

That led to a chance for Tampa and a Brayden Point (11) who buried the second chance effort. Oliver Bjorkstrand (15) and Guentzel (27) earned the assists, putting the Lightning up 3-0.

Christian Dvorak (10) answered just over a minute later with an unassisted breakaway goal, getting the Flyers on the board.

Philadelphia had two power-play opportunities in the second: one after a Cernak hold, and the other following a Brandon Hagel interference call. The Flyers did not score on either.

Tampa Bay got one more chance on the man-advantage after a Nick Seeler interference penalty. Brandon Hagel (22) scored early on the man-advantage, giving the Lightning a 4-1 lead going into the second intermission.

Third period gong show

The third period of Monday’s game was a little less about the hockey and a little more about fight night.

Monday night’s third period was pure chaos. Missed calls, fights, ejections – it had everything.

The funny thing about the third period was that, despite a long list of penalties, it felt like only half of the violations were called.

All of the chaos added to the total penalty minutes in the game – 46 for the Flyers and 32 for the Lightning.

Nikita Grebenkin and Max Crozier each got tossed for a second fight, behind the Rodrigo Abols-Nick Paul fight. Both Paul and Abols only got five for fighting, and Abols got two for boarding.

Travis Konecny got ejected for abuse of officials after he got called for cross-checking Jake Guentzel, a very weak penalty.

In an ambitious effort, the Flyers pulled Dan Vladar, and with 3:21 to go, Nikita Kucherov (23) nailed the empty net, giving the Lightning a 5-1 lead, the lead they would end the game with.

What’s next

With the Flyers’ four-game home stand wrapping up with Monday’s win/loss, the team now heads on the road, taking on the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday at the KeyBank Center at 7:30 p.m. EST.
