FARGO — The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks currently sit in second place in the West Division standings of the American Association. However, on Wednesday, May 21, the Fargo-Moorhead community will flock to Newman Outdoor Field to continue the celebration for the state champion Moorhead High School hockey team.
The Spuds have been treated like royalty around the F-M area since they brought home their first state championship with a 7-6 win over Stillwater in the 2A state championship game at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on March 8.
The Spuds’ coronation will continue at Newman. The RedHawks will throw their own celebration for the state champs, and the first 1,000 fans will receive a free Spuds state championship T-shirt ahead of the first pitch. Doors open at 5 p.m.
The players and coaches will be introduced to the home crowd between games of a doubleheader against Chicago, approximately 8 p.m. A special introduction is set for the family of Ethan Monshaugen, the beloved student manager who unexpectedly passed away in March 2024.
The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by a member of the state championship team before the first game of the doubleheader. A portion of advanced ticket sales will be donated by the RedHawks to Moorhead Youth Hockey and the Spuds Hockey Alumni Foundation.
Bob Roers, the team’s director of business development, stated, “The RedHawks are excited to honor the Moorhead Spuds Hockey Team and share this with our fans and the entire F-M community. Winning a state hockey championship is a thrill of a lifetime for these young men. We’re hoping to add to their list of memories.”
The RedHawks are hosting the Chicago Dogs in a three-game series. Fargo-Moorhead is 6-3 and is 1-1/2 games behind the West Division-leading Kansas City Monarchs. Chicago is 3-7 and tied for fourth behind the first-place Lake Country DockHounds in the East Division. F-M dropped two of three at Lake Country over the weekend.
