The talk of the Vancouver Canucks Quinn Hughes trade to the Minnesota Wild is still fresh in everyones minds even after a month of it happening, while Hughes ended up going to the Wild, the Carolina Hurricanes were very close to making a deal as well.

“It’s a day that everyone knew was coming but will forever be one of the darkest moments in franchise history, mainly due to the “what if” factor and how things could’ve been different if this club was successful on the ice over the last year.”-Jaxon

Jesperi Kotkaniemi was almost traded for Quinn Hughes.

NHL Rumour Report posted on X some details regarding what the Hurricanes wanted to trade for Hughes. Obviously it would have been much more than just Kotkaniemi, but he would have been one of the headlining pieces of the trade.

David Pagnotta: Re Jesperi Kotkaniemi: They offered him up for Quinn Hughes, they’ve offered him up in other scenarios, I wonder if they go back to Vancouver about another one of their players…Elias Pettersson; I wonder if they circle back – The Sheet (1/9)

In hindsight the Wild trade is a much better deal for the Canucks, especially if Zeev Buium becomes the player everyones thinks he will become. The Hurricanes would have likely given a first round pick as well, but the rest of the package remains unclear. The Hurricanes could be after Elias Pettersson at the deadline, so Kotkaniemi’s name could resurface in some trade talks with the Canucks. However he hasn’t been that impressive since joining the Hurricanes. He only has 6 points in 27 games this year, they would have to throw at least a first rounder and probably a 2nd rounder for Pettersson to make this deal work.
