After hosting the 2026 NHL Winter Classic against the New York Rangers at loanDepot Park and defeating the top team in the Western Conference, the Colorado Avalanche, the Florida Panthers hit the road.
Technically, the back-to-back champions began a six-game road trip. However, after visiting the Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Senators, and Sabres, the Panthers will return home for a few days before flying out again for a back-to-back set in Raleigh and Washington, D.C. It’s likely the coldest journey of their season.
Defenseman Seth Jones, who sustained an upper-body injury against the Rangers on Jan. 2, is listed as week-to-week and will miss the Canadian leg of the trip.
How It Started
In an injury-plagued season, head coach Paul Maurice and his staff have grown accustomed to constant line changes. While it’s no excuse, the Panthers are doing their best to stay afloat.
Florida opened the trip with a rough 4-1 loss in Toronto. Carter Verhaeghe scored the Panthers’ lone goal, his 12th of the season, midway through the third period. It was a historic night for the Maple Leafs organization and their captain, Auston Matthews, as the franchise celebrated his recent milestone as the team’s all-time leading goal scorer. The home crowd had plenty of motivation to extend the celebration.
Despite outshooting Toronto (32-23), blocking more shots (18-10), delivering more hits (31-21), and winning the takeaway battle (8-2), the Panthers struggled to generate offense. Adding to the frustration, Brad Marchand did not finish the game due to an undisclosed injury. Maurice later confirmed the injury was not serious but would require some time to heal. Marchand leads the team with 46 points (23 goals) in 41 games and is a member of Canada’s 2026 Olympic roster.
There was, however, a bright moment in Toronto. Matthew Tkachuk, who has been traveling with the team while awaiting his season debut, along with general manager Bill Zito, visited the Hockey Hall of Fame to donate the Panthers’ 2025 Stanley Cup ring.
The next game brought more disappointment: a 6-2 loss to the league’s “wild child,” the Montreal Canadiens. Sam Bennett, who was left off Team Canada’s roster, scored both Panthers goals, while Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 14 shots. Once again, Florida held advantages in several categories — shots, blocks, and faceoffs — but the broader picture revealed ongoing offensive and defensive issues. Since the Winter Classic, the Panthers have gone three games without a power-play goal. After the second loss in Canada, changes were inevitable.
How It’s Going
27-year-old forward Noah Gregor was placed on waivers. He recorded three points (one goal) in 24 games this season. Shortly thereafter, Sandis Vilmanis, the Latvian-born leader of the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, was recalled. Drafted by Florida in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2022 NHL Draft, Vilmanis is tied for the Checkers’ team lead with 19 points. Notably, Team Latvia named him to its Olympic roster just days before his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators.
Vilmanis didn’t record a point or a shot in that game but logged 14 shifts and 11:48 of ice time. Evan Rodrigues and Verhaeghe each scored on the power play, while Gustav Forsling added a goal to give Florida a 3-1 lead. The Panthers allowed a second goal in the final two minutes but held on for a 3-2 victory.
Following a 4-3 win in Buffalo, the Panthers returned home. On Wednesday, both Tkachuk and Marchand skated with the team in Fort Lauderdale. Tkachuk is eager to make his season debut, and the players, coaching staff, and medical team now face a pivotal decision regarding his return. It appears to be only a matter of time.
On Thursday, the Panthers traveled to Washington, D.C., for their official White House visit, marking the second consecutive year they’ve brought the Stanley Cup to the nation’s capital. After meeting with President Donald Trump and attending formal ceremonies, the team will quickly shift focus back to hockey and head to North Carolina. The Hurricanes will host the Panthers on Friday, Jan. 16, in the first game of a back-to-back. It will be the third meeting between the teams this season, with Florida holding a 2-0 series lead.
Needless to say, the back-to-back champions remain busy, both on and off the ice.
