The Chicago Blackhawks struck first, but failed to respond as the Calgary Flames took care of business 3-1 at the United Center.

The Chicago Blackhawks have now lost two games in a row to teams from Alberta. Monday’s loss to the Edmonton Oilers was followed up by a 3-1 loss to the Calgary Flames on Thursday night. Although the Hawks lost, it felt like they had a real chance in this game.

The Hawks struck first, with Nick Foligno netting his second goal of the season. Youngsters Colton Dach and Landon Slaggert assisted on the play. Just over two minutes and 30 seconds into the game, the Hawks were in front.

Unfortunately, that was the end of the offense. Less than a minute later, Calgary struck back. Yegor Sharangovich tallied his ninth goal of the season on the power play. Soon after, Mikael Backlund took advantage of a Blackhawks power play and scored shorthanded to give the Flames a 2-1 lead.

From there, that was it until the third period. Tyler Bertuzzi hit a post, Connor Bedard made some big plays, but in the end there was nothing much for Chicago. They had their chances and they hung around, but Devin Cooley kept his team ahead.

An empty net goal from Matt Coronato sealed the win for the Flames. Spencer Knight made 20 saves in the loss, but picked up his 13th loss of the season.

Author’s Notes

This game is the type of loss that makes you think, “what’s next?”

Frankly, the Blackhawks have a tough stretch coming up. The Boston Bruins come to town on Saturday, the always-tough Winnipeg Jets venture in on Monday, and then the team plays a good Carolina Hurricanes team on the road. The movement in the standings will be fascinating to watch.

More and more reports surface about the Hawks’ trade deadline plans. Connor Murphy, Jason Dickinson, Nick Foligno, and other expiring contracts could be moved out. Ilya Mikheyev makes sense to bring back at the right number, but there is always a chance he moves too.

At the end of the day, this game is the beginning of the next step. Will they rebound and make a run, or will they settle and let the season run its course, including trading players for future assets? Time will tell.

What’s On Tap Next?

The Blackhawks host the Bruins on Saturday night while honoring the banner years. Many of the 2010s Stanley Cup Champions return to celebrate including Duncan Keith, Marian Hossa, Corey Crawford, and more. Some of the guys were even in attendance on Thursday night.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CT.
