Kim Weiss was hired on Friday as an assistant coach for the American Hockey League’s Colorado Eagles, which promoted her to a full-time position and made her only the second woman to hold that role at the NHL or AHL level.

The Eagles are the AHL affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche. Weiss, 36, was hired as their video coach on Aug. 7, 2024. She joins Seattle Kraken assistant Jessica Campbell as the only women to have coached full-time in the AHL. Campbell, 33, was hired by the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds in 2022 and moved up to the Kraken with former Seattle coach Dan Bylsma, becoming the NHL’s only woman assistant coach. First-year Kraken coach Lane Lambert retained her on his staff.

Weiss initially worked with former Eagles coach Aaron Schneekloth, who moved up to the NHL as a first-year assistant to Lambert in Seattle. A former college player and men’s hockey assistant at Trinity College, Weiss now works with Eagles head coach and former NHL center Mark Letestu.

“Kim has done a great job since joining the Eagles coaching staff, and this is a well-earned promotion,” Kevin McDonald, assistant general manager of the Avalanche and the Eagles’ GM, said in a statement. “We’re excited to see her continued contributions to the team’s success in the future.”

A native of Potomac, Md., Weiss was a guest coach with the Avalanche in 2023-24 and worked four of Colorado’s development camps in various capacities. She played at Trinity College from 2007-11, serving as team captain as a junior and senior while also becoming the NCAA Division III program’s all-time leading scorer.
