Will Smith scored in his return from an upper-body injury, but the San Jose Sharks lost to the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 on Friday at Little Caesars Arena.

Smith missed 13 games with a shoulder injury, but wasted no time getting on the scoresheet with his 13th goal of the season. Collin Graf scored for the third straight game, and Yaroslav Askarov made 21 saves. The Sharks are now 1-1 on their current four-game road trip.

Macklin Celebrini had an assist to give him 72 points on the season.

Alex DeBrincat, J.T. Compher, Dylan Larkin, and Marco Kasper scored for the Red Wings. John Gibson won his fifth straight start, making 20 saves. Patrick Kane didn’t register a point and remains three points away from becoming the NHL’s all-time leading USA-born skater.

Ryan Warsofsky did his best to adjust the lines in the third period, and that helped create a push, but it ultimately wasn’t enough. Graf started the game on a line with Michael Misa, but was moved back with Celebrini and Smith on the top line.

DeBrincat gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 6:18 of the first period with a power-play goal. Lucas Raymond made a seam pass through the slot for DeBrincat to one-time past Askarov.

Smith tied the game 1-1 at 9:54 with his first goal since returning from an upper-body injury. Celebrini’s shot from the slot hit Gibson in the shoulder and bounced over his head for Smith to tap in on the goalline.

Graf put the Sharks up 2-1 at 1:58 of the second period. Nick Leddy feathered a puck toward the net that Graf tipped through the legs of Gibson.

Compher tied the game 2-2 at 6:55. John Klingberg threw a soft pass into the neutral zone that the Wings came back in and scored on a two-on-one.

Larkin gave the Red Wings the lead back at 3-2 with a strange goal at 4:41 of the third period. After another turnover, the Red Wings eventually got the puck to the front, and Askarov wasn’t able to keep the puck from getting over the goal line.

Kasper made it 4-2 with an empty-net goal at 18:28. Tyler Toffoli made a confusing pass at center ice that led to the goal.
