PHILADELPHIA – Three goals in a span of 1:20 is all it took for the New York Rangers (21-22-6) to take the life out of the Philadelphia Flyers (22-17-8) on Saturday at Xfinity Mobile Arena, as Mika Zibanajed’s hat trick led the way in a 6-3 dominating win for the Rangers, and a crushing sixth-straight loss for the Flyers.

Travis Konecny, Travis Sanheim, and Trevor Zegras scored for the Flyers, while Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, and Brennan Othmann scored for the Rangers.

Philadelphia may have scored the game’s first goal, but it was all New York after that. The Rangers scored three goals in each of the first two periods, giving them plenty of cushion to close out the game.

Here is how we got to the final score

Rangers start strong

It was a loose game from the jump. Neither team played strongly in their defensive zone, leading to plenty of rush opportunities.

The Flyers, who scored first, after Travis Sanheim (15) started a rush from the neutral zone, giving the puck to Trevor Zegras (25), who found Travis Konecny (15) with a cross-ice feed after the zone entry. Konecny put the puck past Spencer Martin, who made his first start for the Rangers, giving Philadelphia the 1-0 lead 6:22 into the game.

However, it took the Rangers just 43 seconds to answer, as Artemi Panarin (17) was put in the perfect spot for a one-timer by Vincent Trocheck (17), scoring on the virtually empty net. There was not much Aleksei Kolosov could have done.

However, 21 seconds later, Mika Zibanejad (19) fired one in from the high slot with no traffic in front, getting it past Kolosov, giving New York the 2-1 lead.

It got worse for the Flyers. Less than a minute later, Will Cuylle (14) collected the Christian Dvorak shot that went well wide, springing a rush with Brennan Othmann (1), who scored his first career goal in the NHL, giving the Rangers the 3-1 lead.

The Rangers scored three goals in 1:20, on their first three shots of the game. Aleksi Kolosov lasted 8:25 before being pulled for Sam Ersson.

Ersson settled things down as the first period ended. He was forced to make just three saves, but they were good saves. The Flyers’ offense was unable to chip away at the lead, as the game went into the first intermission 3-1.

It only gets worse for the Flyers

Philadelphia started the second period with a solid shift, looking ready to start cutting into the Rangers’ lead. However, an early Matvei Michkov tripping penalty killed any momentum and put the Flyers on the penalty kill.

They were able to kill off the first penalty, but a minute after, they were back at even strength. A Sam Ersson penalty for a puck over the glass put the penalty kill unit back on the ice, and they did not have the same success.

Artemi Panarin (36) sent a pass across the ice, through three Flyers defenders, giving Mika Zibanejad (20) the golden chance, one that he did not waste, scoring his second goal of the game, and putting New York up 4-1.

Just about three minutes later, Zibanejad (21) ran a give-and-go with J.T. Miller (17), sealing the hat trick and putting the Rangers up 5-1.

The bleeding did not stop there.

Panarin (18) had just one defenseman to beat before the goalie, and did, adding to the Rangers’ lead, making it 6-2.

Philadelphia showed some life late in the second period. While killing a Nikita Grebenkin penalty, Travis Konecny (26) sprung a breakaway and set up Travis Sanheim (6) for the one-time short-handed goal, cutting the deficit to 6-2.

The Flyers looked deflated, and the Rangers took advantage of it. They scored three goals in the second period and poured on 13 shots on goal before taking the 6-2 lead into the second intermission.

Flyers make a late-game push

In the third period, Philadelphia showed a bit more life, as they made a late-game push.

There were several instances where the Flyers had the puck loose near the goal line, but could not get it to cross. Nikita Grebenkin had a great chance after an Owen Tippett shot almost banked off the boards and in. Grebenkin tried to push it across, but got tied up by several Rangers and could not get his stick on it.

A few minutes later, Matvei Michkov had the puck on the goalie, but could not get the final push on it before Martin covered the puck.

There were even some great looks from in close. Konecny had a good look, but could not get the puck over Martin’s pad. Trevor Zegras had a monster one-timer that went wide. For the first time since Konecny’s game-opening goal, the Flyers had life.

Just before the flurry of great opportunities, Zegras (19) did send a one-timer to the back of the net with assists from Owen Tippett (14) and Denver Barkey (5). However, the one goal was not enough to get the Flyers back into the game.

New York held on, handing the Flyers their sixth-straight loss, 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Xfinity Mobile Arena.

What’s next

The Flyers get right back on the road, as they head out west to take on the Las Vegas Golden Knights on Monday at 8:00 p.m. EST, kicking off a three-game trip.
