Veteran defenseman Carson Soucy is absent from the New York Rangers practice once again, sparking some serious questions and depth worries.

Sunday’s skate had a weird look, because Colin Stephenson reported Carson Soucy wasn’t there and only six defensemen were dressed. For a team already living in roster math, that’s not the kind of quiet update you ignore.

Soucy not here. Only 6 D dressed for practice.

UPDATE: Connor Mackey has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Carson Soucy absence tests New York Rangers depth

Mackey’s track record in Hartford is solid enough for that role, with 24 points in 66 AHL games last season, and the Wolf Pack and Elite Prospects both list the same 6 goals and 18 assists.

If Soucy remains away into the next game, the Rangers either run light again or bring someone back up fast. Either option makes matchups tougher, because pairs get stretched and the margin for a bad shift gets thinner.

The only real conclusion right now is that this is still framed as personal, not trade related, and it deserves that respect. The next milestone is simple, see Soucy back with the team, then let the Rangers keep their roster moves boring again.
