Golden Knights trade for Defenseman Rasmus Andersson

  • January 20, 2026

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) — The Vegas Golden Knights acquired defenseman Rasmus Andersson from the Calgary Flames in a deadline deal that strengthens the team’s blue line as it rides a seven-game winning streak.

The 29-year-old Andersson, in his 10th NHL season, posted 30 points in 48 games this season while averaging 24 minutes of ice time per night and playing in all situations, including power play and penalty kill. Multiple reports indicated Vegas was Andersson’s preferred destination.

Andersson was selected to represent Sweden in the Winter Olympics and is in the final year of his contract.

Trade Details

The Golden Knights acquired Andersson with Calgary retaining 50 percent of his salary. The Flames received defenseman Zach Whitecloud, Vegas’ 2027 first-round pick and a conditional 2028 second-round pick that becomes a first-rounder if the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup.

Calgary also received the rights to defenseman Abram Wiebe, a seventh-round pick by Vegas in the 2022 draft.

Whitecloud’s Legacy

Whitecloud, who departs after eight seasons with the Golden Knights, leaves behind a significant legacy. The 28-year-old appeared in 368 regular-season games and 78 playoff games, scoring the game-winning goal in Game 1 of the 2023 Stanley Cup Final.

This season, Whitecloud appeared in 47 games with 2 goals and 7 points, averaging 18 minutes 47 seconds per game.
